Absolute Cinema Meme: Meaning, Origin, and Why Everyone Keeps Saying It

What Does the Absolute Cinema Meme Mean?

At its simplest, the absolute cinema meme means this was peak filmmaking. It is used to react to a movie scene, an anime sequence, a sports highlight, or even a real-life moment that felt like it belonged on the big screen.

The classic format is a black-and-white image of Martin Scorsese with his hands raised in admiration, with the words absolute cinema written over it. When someone posts an incredible football goal, a breathtaking anime fight, or a plot twist that broke the internet, the replies flood in with this meme.

But like all great memes, it has a second life as sarcasm. People now use it for moments that are the opposite of cinematic: a dramatic soap opera slap, someone tripping in slow motion, a TikTok fail set to epic orchestral music. The joke is the gap between the grand praise and the silly reality.

According to internet slang dictionaries, absolute cinema now broadly means anything personally considered outstanding or amusing. A great movie is absolute cinema. Your friend’s dramatic reaction to losing at video games is also absolute cinema.

Where Did the Absolute Cinema Meme Come From?

The story of this meme has two chapters: a photograph from 2020 and a tweet from 2022.

The Scorsese Photo (2020)

On January 2, 2020, The New York Times published an interview with Martin Scorsese, one of the most celebrated film directors in history. The article included a black-and-white photograph of Scorsese lifting both hands in an expressive, almost reverent gesture, as if he was overwhelmed by the power of cinema itself.

At the time, nobody thought much of the photo. It was just a striking portrait of a passionate filmmaker. But the internet never forgets a good reaction image.

The Chainsaw Man Post (2022)

On December 1, 2022, everything changed. An X user named @YashChillinn posted a clip from the anime Chainsaw Man next to the Scorsese photo, captioned absolute cinema. The post praised a short sequence animated by Takuya Niinuma, showing one of Makima’s subordinates walking on a train to Kyoto right before a major dramatic moment.

The pairing was perfect: jaw-dropping anime visuals plus cinema’s most respected director giving his silent approval. The post took off, and the format was born.

Interestingly, absolute cinema was actually a spin on an earlier, less popular meme called This Is Cinema, which used a different Scorsese photo taken by an Associated Press photographer in 2016. But the raised-hands version had something special, and it quickly overtook its predecessor.

The Ironic Twist: Why Scorsese Makes It Funnier

Here is the part that makes the meme truly hilarious. Martin Scorsese is famous for saying that Marvel superhero movies are not cinema. Back in 2019, he compared them to theme parks, arguing they lacked the emotional depth of real filmmaking.

So the internet did what it does best: it took the man who gatekept the word cinema and turned him into the ultimate stamp of approval for literally everything. Anime fights? Absolute cinema. A basketball dunk? Absolute cinema. A cat knocking a glass off a table in slow motion? Absolute cinema.

How the Absolute Cinema Meme Went Viral

After that first Chainsaw Man post in December 2022, the meme spread steadily through 2023. Here are the key moments:

• March 23, 2023 — X user @_lalaxyz used the image to react to a post about the horror classic The Shining, one of the earliest notable uses beyond anime.
• April 16, 2023 — X user @Br32 posted it about NBA star Russell Westbrook’s wild on-court plays, proving the meme worked for sports too.
• September 2023 — A greentext-style format called Kino Is Served, built on the same Scorsese image, went viral in anime circles, with one post pulling in hundreds of reposts and thousands of likes.
• Late 2023 onward — The format became fully exploitable. People replaced Scorsese with other characters: Shadow the Hedgehog, Optimus Prime, and more. A parody version called ABSOLUTE GARBAGE appeared for hilariously bad moments.

From there it jumped to TikTok, Instagram, Reddit, and Discord. Today you will find it everywhere, from film discussions to gaming streams to sports highlights.

Absolute Cinema vs Kino vs Peak Cinema: What Is the Difference?

If you spend time in film or anime communities, you will see three phrases used almost interchangeably: absolute cinema, kino, and peak cinema. They are cousins, not twins.

Absolute cinema is the full package: the Scorsese image, the grand declaration, usable for both genuine praise and irony. It is the most mainstream of the three.

Kino is the older, more underground term. It comes from film-buff slang and simply means a movie or scene of the highest quality. Saying something is kino is a quiet nod of respect. It is less of a meme and more of a badge of taste.

Peak cinema is the casual, hype-driven version. It is what you say when something was the best thing you have seen in a while, no irony required. Less formal than kino, less meme-y than absolute cinema.

Think of it this way: kino is what a film critic whispers, peak cinema is what a fan shouts, and absolute cinema is what the whole internet posts with a picture of Scorsese.

The Funniest Ways People Use the Absolute Cinema Meme

The meme shines in two modes: sincere and sarcastic. Here are the best of both.

Genuine praise mode:

• A breathtaking anime sequence with animation so smooth it looks unreal. Absolute cinema.
• A last-second goal in a championship final, with the crowd losing its mind. Absolute cinema.
• A plot twist in a prestige TV drama that nobody saw coming. Absolute cinema.
• A video game cutscene directed like a Hollywood blockbuster. Absolute cinema.

Sarcastic mode:

• A soap opera actor delivering the most overdramatic slap in television history. Absolute cinema.
• Someone falling off a chair while dramatic movie music plays. Absolute cinema.
• A pigeon stealing a sandwich like it is a heist movie. Absolute cinema.
• Your friend narrating their grocery run like a war documentary. Absolute cinema.

The sarcastic uses are often the funniest because they borrow the language of high art to describe total nonsense. That contrast never gets old.

Why Is the Absolute Cinema Meme So Popular?

A few things make this meme nearly indestructible.

It is endlessly flexible. It works for movies, anime, sports, gaming, and real life. Any moment with even a hint of drama can be crowned with it.

The image is iconic. Scorsese’s raised hands are instantly readable. You do not need to know who he is to feel the energy: this man has seen something incredible.

The irony gives it layers. Film lovers use it sincerely. Meme lovers use it sarcastically. Both groups are in on the joke, just from different angles.

It turned film snobbery into a joke everyone can share. You do not need a film degree to post it. The meme handed the grandest praise in cinema to the entire internet.

It keeps evolving. With edits swapping Scorsese for other characters and new variants like ABSOLUTE GARBAGE, the format refreshes itself constantly.

How to Make Your Own Absolute Cinema Meme

Want to join in? Here is how to do it right:

Step 1: Find your moment. Pick a clip, screenshot, or scene that is either genuinely epic or hilariously overdramatic. Both work.

Step 2: Get the template. Search any meme generator for the absolute cinema template. The classic is the black-and-white Scorsese photo with his hands raised.

Step 3: Pair them up. Put your epic moment next to Scorsese’s approving hands. Add the caption absolute cinema in bold text.

Step 4: Know your tone. If the moment is genuinely great, let the meme praise it. If it is silly, lean into the irony. The audience will get it either way.

Step 5: Share it. Post it on X, Reddit, TikTok, or Discord wherever the moment is being discussed. Timing matters: the meme hits hardest when the hype is fresh.

Pro tip: For maximum comedy, use it on the most mundane things possible. A perfectly flipped pancake. A dog catching a frisbee in slow motion. The dumber the subject, the funnier the praise.

Final Thoughts

The absolute cinema meme took a serious term from film criticism, filtered it through anime fandom and internet irony, and turned it into a universal seal of approval. It works because it is both a genuine compliment and a great joke, sometimes at the same time.

Whether you are praising a masterpiece or crowning a pancake flip, those two words carry the full weight of cinema history and none of the seriousness. And that is exactly why the internet cannot stop saying them.
